Matt 5:23-24
Reconcile before worship.
The obvious impact of this passage is to tell
people that their worship may be ineffective. A person cannot come to
God and through his worship say that he loves God if their is anger,
bitterness, and resentment in his heart towards his neighbor. We love
God through keeping his commandments.
- 1John 5:2-3 "This is how we know that we
love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his
commands. This is love for God: to obey his
commands..."
- Luke 10:27 " 'Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength
and with all your mind'[ 10:27 Deut. 6:5] ; and, 'Love
your neighbor as yourself.'[ 10:27 Lev. 19:18]

Worship with hardness of heart would be very
much like the Pharasees whom the Lord accused of hypocrisy.
Matt.
23:27-28.
- Eph. 4:20-27 NRSV "That is not the way
you learned Christ! For surely you have heard about him and were
taught in him, as truth is in Jesus. You were taught to put away
your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its
lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to
clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the
likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. So then,
putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our
neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not
sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make
room for the devil. " Compare the NAB.
