South County EMS provides Basic Life Support in a 130 square mile area in southwestern Lewis County, Washington. South County EMS serves a population base of approximately 6,000 citizens.
South County EMS was organized under a cooperative service agreement between Lewis County Fire Districts #15-Winlock and #2-Toledo. Lewis County Fire District #7-Vader joined South County EMS in 1997. South County EMS was organized to provide the highest level of emergency medical service for the best price to the citizens of its supportive fire districts. Under the cooperative service agreement EMS supplies, equipment, and apparatus are purchased under one agency contract. This allows South County EMS to purchase these items at reduced costs, thus, stretching our tax payers' dollars.
South County EMS is governed by a board of commissioners. This board is made up of commissioners of each of the fire districts involved. An executive secretary, appointed by the board, processes billing, orders supplies and communicates policy directives from the board to the Fire Chiefs of each of the fire districts involved.
South County EMS operates five Basic Life Support transport units out of the Lewis County Fire District #15, #2 and #7. Advanced Life Support is provided by American Medical Response based out of Chehalis, Washington. When advanced life support is required, a paramedic unit responds from the Chehalis area and meets the South County EMS units in-route to the hospital and boards these units to provide ALS treatment. The paramedic will then ride on board the South County EMS unit to the receiving hospital. South County EMS personnel are Washington State certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
