Thanksgiving 2002

This is the view from our hotel window, from the 18th floor. We stayed a night at the Eldorado, and one night at the Silver Legacy across the street.

Oh no! Slots! These were at the Reno Airport.

This is the view from Gregg and Heather's window in their Susanville home. They live right in the middle of 40 acres of scrub brush and tumble weeds. Very private. We felt a little exposed, with no trees for miles around! On Thanksgiving night we all stayed up late talking and looking at the vivid stars outside these windows. Mike and I both saw an amazing shooting star that lasted several seconds, and we could see it breaking up as it fell!!

Here's an outside shot of their place. It's a nice double-wide mobile home with toasty-warm wood stove. The building to the right is a shop, where their cats sleep!

Near their home are these Indian petroglyphs. Some are real, some are probably recent graffiti.

Mike and Janean bundled up for the cold. It got down to the 20s at night. My water bottle froze on Thursday night!

On Friday we drove about 50 miles up to a lake for a chilly picnic. We were near 6000 feet, and there was some snow and ice around. We built a fire (with help from gasoline) and roasted garden burgers over the coals!

What a beautiful lake! That's the car we rented, a new Ford Escort. It handled the slippery snow quite well.

Oh yummm, Thanksgiving dinner! There were just enough leftovers for us to feast again the next day :)

On Sabbath morning we woke up to about six inches of snow! Made for an interesting drive to church, but we made it OK. Mike and the kids had fun freezing their hands off during a snow fight.

We took turns riding on their gentle horses.

The view from their living room window of the powdery snow...
